Punjabi film industry is transforming with each passing day. Talented actors, visionary directors and meaningful stories have changed the face of Pollywood. Over the years, many actresses have stepped into the Punjabi film industry. Where some of them touched heights of success, others could not rise much on the fame chart. And then there were also a few actresses who gained fame on their debut releases but then they sort of disappeared from the industry.
We bring to you a list of such actresses who rose as a star but soon faded away from the limelight.
Gauahar Khan started her career as a model and later made her acting debut with a Bollywood movie, Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year in 2009. She garnered fame through her Bollywood projects and a TV Series, Bigg Boss. Subsequently, she stepped into the Punjabi Industry with the movie Oh Yaara Ainvayi Ainvayi Lut Gaya as the main lead opposite Jassi Gill. The movie revolved around the happily married Gunjan (Gauahar Khan) and Ranveer (Jassi Gill), and how troubles start brewing in their paradise. The movie could not weave its magic on the Box office. People had a lot of expectations from Gauahar’s debut but apparently both the movie and her acting got mixed reviews. But Gauahar, I’m sure your fans are waiting for more!
Lauren Gottlieb, a dancer-actress, who hails from America, got recognition from Bollywood movies like Any Body Can Dance (ABCD) and ABCD 2. She has also been a part of various dance reality shows. She entered the Punjabi industry with the movie Sardaarji 2 alongside Diljit Dosanjh, where she played the role of a photographer and had even learnt Punjabi for her role. The movie’s opening smashed all records at the box office. Lauren’s acting too received appreciation but we wonder whether we will be able to see her in any more Punjabi movies in future!
After earning appreciation for various Bollywood roles like Saira Rashid in Ladies vs Ricky Bahl and Lajjo in Mausam, Aditi made her debut in the Punjabi industry with the movie Angrej, where she essayed the role of Madho. The movie received amazing response at the box office and became the fourth highest grossing Punjabi film of all times. Aditi’s acting was also appreciated by the audiences but we are yet to see her in another Pollywood flick.
Sagarika gained immense recognition for her role in ‘Chak De! India’ as Preeti Sabarwal. She further took a leap into the Punjabi industry with the movie Dildariyaan. The movie starred Sagarika Ghatge and Jassi Gill as the main lead. She played the role of a typical Punjabi girl and even attended Punjabi workshops to get the lingo right, which infused confidence in her acting. Sagarika’s role as Paali won praises and her chemistry with Jassi Gill was also admired by the public. We are really keen to watch her more on screen!
Her acting career started with a Telegu film in the year 2000. Since then she has acted in various Indian film industries like Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi, to name a few. She ushered in the Punjabi Cinema with the movie Yaariyan in 2008. She played the main lead opposite Gurdas Mann. After that she has been a part of various other film industries other than Punjabi.
Miss Pooja is the singing sensation of Punjab, popular as the Queen of Punjabi music. After carving her name as a successful singer in Pollywood, she went on to try her hand in acting. Her first movie was Punjaban- Love Rules Hearts, which was released in 2010, followed by two more movies, Ishq Garaari and Pooja Kiven Aa in 2013. Since then she has given many hit songs and performances but her acting journey has come to a halt.
Minissha is a known face of Indian film industry. Her acting career got a kick start in 2008. Her notable Bollywood movies include Bachna Ae Haseeno, Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd., and Well Done Abba, to name a few. She marked her Pollywood debut with Heer and Hero in 2013. Thereafter she was seen in another Punjabi movie, Double Di Trouble, in 2014, which happens to be her last Punjabi movie.
This actress was well acknowledged for her role in Jatt James Bond opposite Gippy Grewal and the movie did some serious business at the box office. Released in 2014, this one was a romantic thriller. Zareen has lately been pretty busy with her Bollywood projects but we’d love to have her back in Punjabi industry for more movies.
Oshin made her dream debut with a Punjabi movie Mukhtiar Chaddha opposite Diljit Dosanjh but unfortunately the industry couldn’t see more of her. Though she is seen in Punjabi videos but for the big screen, probably there’s more for her to do than just make up!
It is said that Mehreen was discovered by Harbhajan Mann at a wedding. She starred as the leading lady in the cult classic Punjabi movie Haani. Hailng from Patiala, Mehreen recently appeared in Harjit Harman’s recent song Tareekan but her appearance in another Punjabi flick is still awaited.
These actresses couldn’t stick around in the Punjabi industry for long, even though some were really good. What could have been the reason??
